WHAT IS THE ICJ ADVISORY OPINION?

This is a landmark Advisory Opinion by the International Court of Justice on States’ obligations in relation to climate
change and the legal consequences of failing to meet those obligations. It clarifies States’ obligations under
international law to protect the climate and environment for present and future generations. The Opinion is wide-ranging,
interpreting climate treaties, other environmental agreements, and customary international law, with implications across
many areas of international and domestic law and policy.
