Kenyan delegation will appear before the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights Thursday and Friday to justify the country’s record on how it has upheld them.
Kenya is one of the 164 States* that have ratified the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR) and so is required to report to the Committee, which is composed of 18 independent experts.
The Committee will issue its findings on Kenya and the other States being reviewed – Namibia and Canada – on 7 March.
Key issues the Committee raised after the Kenya Civil Society Organisation’s submission at the public opening include:
- Harmful practices against women
- Other laws except constitution on Gender inequality
- Corruption and bad governance
- FGM and why the act is not working
- What has changed after recognition of economic social and cultural rights
- Progress of implementation of 2/3 gender rule
- Current status of IDP Bill
- Progress on implementation of Endorois case
