ICJ Kenya Signs MoU with Laikipia University to Promote Human Rights Education

ICJ Kenya and Laikipia University on Thursday, September 6, 2018, signed a memorandum of understanding towards promoting human rights, respect for the rule of law, democracy, and good governance. ICJ Kenya Executive Director Samwel Mohochi, welcomed the partnership with the institution during the MOU signing ceremony in Serena Hotel, Nairobi.

The partnership’s objective is to enable young people to know their rights and respect other people’s rights. Teaching this crucial topic creates a safe place for students to explore and discuss challenges in the human rights world.

The MoU was signed by ICJ Kenya Chairman Kelvin Mogeni and Laikipia University Vice-Chancellor Professor Joseph Rotich.
“The commitment we are entering into today is founded on our shared belief that, human rights education is central to developing a culture of human rights in Kenya and the region” Professor Joseph Rotich confirmed.

Laikipia University is the first institution in the region to introduce Human Rights Education to their curriculum. They believe that human rights can only be achieved through an informed and continued demand by people for their protection.

The university is devoted to increasing a worldwide reputation for excellence within the subject of human rights teaching, research and advocacy, with a view to enticing excessive excellent students in undergraduate and postgraduate applications as well as to construct a thriving community of researchers.

“The youth are the citizens of tomorrow, therefore, equipping them with human rights education is vital to ensure a global tradition of human rights. One of the methods is to impart them with the guidance towards creating a world where human rights are respected and upheld,” ICJ Kenya Chairman Kelvin Mogeni said.

The University is convinced that Human Rights Education cannot be reduced to the simple introduction of human rights content in already overburdened curricula. It brings a profound reform of education, which touches upon curricula in service and pre-service training, textbooks, methodology, classroom management and the organization of the education system at all levels.

“We are excited to join hands with ICJ Kenya towards achieving a human rights curriculum that informs and educates higher learning in Kenya and the region,” said the Professor.

In this regard, ICJ Kenya has stepped up to play an important role in bridging the existing gap to ensure that the pragmatic content of Human Rights is taught to all through the offering of Human Rights education and training in the university.
