The 2019 Uwazi Football Tournament series, which marks its 10th anniversary this year, was held on 17th September 2019 at Stima Club, Nairobi. The annual tournament attracted 24 teams drawn from law firms and corporates in Nairobi.
The theme for this year’s Uwazi Cup tournament was 60 years of promoting criminal justice reforms and human rights in Africa. This was mainly informed by the work that ICJ Kenya has done to promote human rights and criminal justice reform.
ICJ Kenya together with other organizations has been running a campaign on the decriminalization and reclassification of petty offences dubbed “Poverty is not a crime.”
In his opening remarks, a former ICJ Kenya Chairman Mohamed Nyaoga declared he does not doubt that the laudable change of attitude in the Kenyan public is attributable to the studious work of ICJ Kenya over the 60 years of its existence.
“We gather here to compete, commemorate and celebrate. May the best team win,” he said.
In light of the above, ICJ Kenya together with her partners have led a national and regional campaign to advocate for the decriminalization and reclassification of petty offences. This has been done through building coalitions to advocate for law reform and change in practices by law enforcement agencies.
ICJ Kenya through this campaign, being in line with its mandate of promoting human rights and justice seeks to bring together state and non-state actors in the criminal justice and human rights field to create awareness on petty offences and bring reforms to the criminal justice system in Kenya.
The Kenya Law emerged the WINNERS of this year’s edition after a penalty shootout with Davis and Shirtliff. Emerging Law Firms emerged in 3rd place.
Kenya Law fraternity celebrated a major feat winning the overall Uwazi football tournament 2019.
The closing ceremony was attended by the ICJ Kenya Council Treasurer Chris Gitari who presented the overall winner trophy to Kenya Law.
