ICJ Kenya is managed under a Constitution by a Governing Council of seven members elected for two terms during an Annual General Meeting of members. The Council comprises the Chairperson, Vice-chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer and three non-office bearers and each can only serve for a maximum of two terms.
The principle role of the Council is to provide a strategic framework within which the ICJ Kenya secretariat executes programmes/projects. The secretariat staff are professional people employed on equal opportunity basis.
Kelvin Mogeni, Chairman
Kelvin Mogeni is an advocate of the High Court of Kenya with a wide experience in constitutional law. He is a practicing arbitrator with practice in India, Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi and the United Kingdom. He is the proprietor and Managing Partner of Mogeni and Company Advocates based in Nairobi. His practice is focused on constitutional law, commercial litigation, civil litigation and conveyance.
Kelvin was elected to the ICJ Kenya Council in December 2013 and was elected Chairman on 24th November 2017
Mr. Patrick Ngunjiri, Vice Chairman
Mr. Patrick Ngunjiri holds an LLB degree from the University of Nairobi (1998), and an LLM in Fundamental Right and Freedoms from the University of South Africa (2007). He was admitted as an advocate of the High Court of Kenya in 2000 and is also a Certified Public Secretary (CPS (K).
He is the managing partner at PLASS LAW Advocates, a law firm specializing in fundamental rights litigation, civil litigation, conveyancing, commercial litigation, land and environmental litigation as well as employment and labour disputes. He has also taught Civil Procedure, Professional Ethics and Conveyancing at Mount Kenya University. He joined the Council of ICJ Kenya in December 2013 and was elected the Vice Chairman on 24th November 2017
Ms Brenda Kamau, Secretary
Ms. Brenda Kamau is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya. She graduated with a Bachelor of Law degree LLB from the University of Nagpur, India, in 1995. She is currently engaged as a partner in the firm of Ndirangu Kamau Advocates and her practice is focused on Family Law, Civil Litigation, Commercial Litigation and Conveyance. Brenda was elected to the Council of ICJ Kenya in December 2013 and elected the Secretary on 24th November 2017.
Christopher Gitari, Treasurer
Christopher Gitari is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with extensive experience and training in constitutional and public law, transitional justice, legislative drafting and dispute resolution. Christopher has worked in Kenya and within the wider Eastern African region where he has provided support to state and non -state actors in the areas of constitutional law, access to justice (policy analysis and implementation), international criminal justice, electoral law (election dispute resolution) and international human rights law.
Prior to joining ICTJ, Chris worked with ICJ Kenya as a program officer, where he was instrumental in the drafting and advocacy efforts that saw the passage of a number of laws, including the Truth, Justice, and Reconciliation Act.
Christopher holds a bachelor’s degree in law from the University of Nairobi, an LL.M. from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, post-graduate diploma and certificate from the Kenya School of Law, Queen Mary, University of London, and from the College of Law, England and Wales.
Charles Mwongela, Member
Charles Mwongela is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya admitted on 12th March, 1998 with a wide experience in International Trade and Investment Law. Presently he is the proprietor of his own law firm; C.B. Mwongela and Co. Advocates.
Mwongela holds a Master’s degree in Law in Trade and investment law from the University of Nairobi, an LL.B. from the same institution, post-graduate diploma and certificate from the Kenya School of Law.
Donald Muyundo, Member
Donald Muyundo is an advocate of the High Court of Kenya of 19 years standing and is a holder of diverse qualifications in law and accounts from the University of Nairobi, Strathmore College and the Kenya School of Law.
Donald is currently a partner at D W Muyundo and associates advocates, Nairobi. He is very passionate about human rights, good governance and the rule of law and has pursued these ideals through his membership of the ICJ Kenya, Law Society of Kenya and has been offering his services as a pro bono lawyer for various organizations including Kituo cha Sheria and the East African Peace Institute among others.
Hon. Priscilla Nyokabi Kanyua, Member
Hon. Nyokabi is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and holds a Bachelor of Law Degree from the University of Nairobi and a Diploma from the Kenya School of Law. She is the first Nyeri County Woman Member of Parliament where she served from 2013 to 2017. Previously, Hon. Nyokabi has served as the Executive Director of Kituo Cha Sheria, the Deputy Presiding Officer Eastern Africa in the African Union Permanent Assembly of the Civil Society (AU ECOSOC) and as a Media Council of Kenya Complaints Commissioner.
During her stint in Parliament Hon. Nyokabi championed issues of women, human rights and development. She served in various Parliamentary committees including: Justice and Legal Affairs Committee as the Vice Chair, Budget and Appropriations Committee, House Business Committee, Chairperson of Caucus 47 of all the County Women Representatives, Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) as an Executive Committee Member and Catholic MPs Forum as a Member.
