NAIROBI, KENYA: One week after the High Court in Kenya issued a landmark judgment in the Constitutional Petition No. 122 of 2013, Sexual and Gender Based Survivors from across the country convened in Nairobi today to chart a way forward after the judgement.
Survivors want their rights protected and safeguarded by the Government. They are calling on the government to ensure that the judgment is implemented and that all other survivors receive meaningful reparations. During the 2007/2008 post-election violence, there were more than 900 cases of sexual and gender-based violence that were reported. ‘The Government of Kenya must fulfill its basic legal and human rights duties to acknowledge the harm that we have suffered, ensure accountability, and give us reparations’ said one of the survivors.
It is therefore imperative that the government provides meaningful accountability for these crimes and end the rampant impunity for sexual violence in the country even as we approach the 2022 general elections.
More information on Constitutional Petition No. 122 of 2013 and efforts to secure justice for survivors of post-election sexual violence is available here.
Experts from the co-petitioner organizations are available for interview before and following the December 10 judgement.
