ICJ-Kenya’s Democratization Programme focuses on promoting and protecting Kenya’s democratic processes. The Democratization Programme seeks to ensure open and accountable governance and election processes through policy analysis, governmental monitoring and civic engagement. The Programme currently is focusing on the following areas:
- Freedom of Information: ICJ-Kenya has been championing the cause of action to information and the right to know in Kenya for the past decade. Under the Constition of Kenya, 2010, Access to Information is enshrined as a right for each Kenyan citizen – ICJ-Kenya is working to realize this right by advocating for Freedom of Information legislation, to ensure a transparent and responsible government.
- Electoral Law Engagement: ICJ-Kenya seeks to engage in the development of Kenyan electoral laws and policies in three ways. First, by monitoring, analyzing and critiquing the creation and implementation of electoral legislation passed through Parliament. Second, by building capacity among national and regional media sources through the use of training toolkits. Finally, ICJ-Kenya hopes to empower individuals through public education seminars and civic engagement workshops.
