The Kenyan Section of the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ Kenya) is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Abdulkadir Issa Noormohamed as the Executive Director of the organization effective from 1st August 2019.
Mr. Noormohamed is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with a proven track record with solid background in policy, advocacy and research within the non- governmental Sector. Mr. Noormohamed comes to ICJ Kenya from the Open Society Initiative for Eastern Africa (OSIEA), Nairobi, Kenya. While at OSIEA Mr. Noormohammed managed the day to day programme performance of four portfolios. Mr. Noormohammed brings into ICJ Kenya a wealth of experience in human rights, leadership and management, innovative strategy development, litigation and networking skills.
Mr. Noormohamed is an established transformative Leader with expertise in international justice, security and rights. He has over the years engaged in the protection of human rights defenders at risk and civic space in seven countries in Eastern Africa including working with partners on counter-terrorism and countering violent extremist measures in Kenya. He has worked on accountability for grave crimes with a focus in Kenya, Uganda, South Sudan and Sudan. Prior to his appointment at OSIEA, Mr. Noormohamed worked at the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNHCR) where he headed the Redress and Legal Department for five years.
Mr. Noormohamed has attained training in Human Rights Litigation from Central European University, Creative Activism, Effective Financial Management, Learning to Lead, Transitional Justice, Human Rights Training amongst. He holds a Master of Laws (LLM) in Public International Law, from the University College of London (UCL), a Bachelor of Law (LLB) Honors from University of Nairobi and he is a distinguished Chevening Scholar. He is a Member of the Law Society of Kenya, ICJ Kenya and the Chevening Alumni Network-Kenya. Mr. Noormohamed was admitted to the Bar in 1998 and practiced civil and criminal litigation at Taib A. Taib & Co. Advocates.
