New ICJ Kenya House Construction Progress

This year is ICJ Kenya’s DIAMOND JUBILEE marking 60 years of immense contribution in promoting human rights, justice, democracy and the rule of law in Kenya and Africa.

As we celebrate our key achievements spread over the 60 years, we stand reminded that a key objective of the organizational development priority is to improve on its financial sustainability, informed by the increasing shift in donor priorities and funding, which exposes the financial sustainability and stability of the institution. In view of this and in order to fulfil the organizational objective of developing its own office premises, the ICJ Kenya has planned a long term capital campaign that will support the process of mobilizing resources for putting up a permanent office space for the secretariat on a piece of land acquired in December 2011. The office is situated next to Light Academy off Silanga road with an approximated area of 6,000 square feet.

This traces back to the AGM held in the year 2003, wherein a resolution was passed to commence the ICJ Kenya House project. By 2009, a total sum of Kshs 786,000/- had been collected and had been placed in an Old Mutual Investment Fund. In August 2011, ICJ Kenya acquired the undeveloped property at a consideration of Kshs. 16 million, through a bank facility that was settled in the year 2016. There was a fundraiser in December 2012 that raised Kshs. 774,000.  From the year 2016 to date, ICJ Kenya has raised a further Kshs 325,000 from the new members, bringing the total sum of the funds raised from the year 2003 to date at Kshs 3.1 million.

The process of constructing the ICJ Kenya House started on the 24th June 2018 2018, for 32 weeks, with an anticipated handover date of 17th May 2019, which will mark the historic milestone that will usher in ICJ Kenya’s 60th Anniversary. The office will allow the secretariat to comfortably work and continue their working of promoting a just, fee and equitable society in line with its vision. ICJ Kenya’s 60 years, is a story that has stood the test of time and has remained relevant to changing times.

The acquisition cost of the land in Karen was Kshs 16 million, with a projected construction cost of Kshs 35 million. ICJ Kenya secured a loan facility of Kshs 23.5 million from NIC Bank with a charge on the Karen property title, as a stop gap measure to ensure construction is undertaken within the contract period. We are intent on raising the entire amount for the construction.  The difference in the actual construction cost and the bank facility is Kshs 11.5 million, which is unav

The ICJ Kenya council took the initiative of reaching out to all the former Chairmen who have graciously agreed to come onboard to assist us in resource mobilization, under the umbrella of the ICJ Kenya Former Chairs Forum, steered by Mr. Mohammed Nyaoga. In this regard, the last forum meeting agreed on the funds categorization by the various cadre under the ICJ structure, with the cut off amount from the membership body set at Kshs. 100,000/- as the minimum. In this vein, members are encouraged to mobilize their friends and clients, in sourcing for the funds.

Our valued members are equally encouraged to pay their subscriptions for the current and subsequent years in advance, which monies will facilitate the completion of the ICJ Kenya House, with a reciprocated benefit of being listed in ICJ Kenya’s roll of honor and being exempt from any possible increase in the subscription fee for subsequent years. For the members who would wish to equally attend the Gala dinner, they would be expected to contribute an additional fee charge of Kshs 5,000/-, which is to cater for the same.

It is expected that the good will contributions will build a moment that will culminate into the hosting of the Gala dinner, where the funds so much raised shall be inaugurated and subsequently the launch of the ICJ Kenya Human Rights Center and Secretariat office.
